It's time to provide effective leadership and add some much needed balance to Council.

It's time to implement Plan Nanaimo through responsible development that will contribute to Nanaimo and increase density in manageable ways. I particularly want to encourage affordable housing for all ages.

It's time to ensure that taxes remain affordable. We need to strive to find a balance between what we desire and what we can afford.

It's time Council provided a truly open transparent process so that you have the opportunity to influence the decisions that affect you.

And it's time to ensure Nanaimo is age-friendly -- so that all ages can enjoy our parks and facilities, and can access our buses and stores.

Born in Vancouver, Darcy moved to Nanaimo in 2004 to raise her children and immediately fell in love with trail walks through the many parks, the easy accessibility to the waterfront and the friendly people of Nanaimo.

After attending Selkirk College and earning a certificate in an Administration program, Darcy worked as a Constituency Assistant for two MLAs, advocating and doing community outreach work. Later, she worked as an Administrative Assistant to the Premier in the Vancouver Cabinet office. Since she moved to Nanaimo, Darcy has been running her own Community Business and Consulting company, working on successful rezoning and permit applications for various locations in Nanaimo, including Country Club Mall, University Village, and Port Place Mall.

Darcy lives in the Harewood neighborhood with her two children.

The Spirit of Archbishop Oscar Romero Commemoration

On Sunday, March 20 Darcy Olsen was. at St. Andrew’s United Church in Nanaimo. The people of Nanaimo and surrounding communities had an opportunity to remember the life of Archbishop Oscar Romero and to reflect on the legacy of his spirit for our time. Remi De Roo, Bishop Emeritus of Victoria Diocese, who knew Archbishop Romero was a featured speaker.

Archbishop Oscar Romero of El Salvador was assassinated as he celebrated mass on March 24, 1980. Romero paid with his life for his outspoken advocacy for human rights, his fearless defense of the poor and his opposition to war and militarism. As we celebrate his spirit thirty-one years later, we not only remember a great and loving human being, we also ask “What are some of the issues Archbishop Romero would be involved with in our time if he were still with us?”

Darcy attended the 11th Annual Ides of March celebration today where she met with members of Nanaimo's legal community and other guests. Another great afternoon and evening filled with political discussions and debates. Darcy stands out as the candidate that can represent All residents of Nanaimo.

For the record, the Ides of March celebration occurs on the Thursday of the week in which the actual Ides (15th) falls.

Darcy spent the afternoon in the Hammond Bay area with a group interested in the by-election. In the picture above, Darcy and Mrs. Evelyn Routledge were discussing wheelchair accessible sidewalk corners. Darcy would like to thank all that attended for their interest in local politics. Prior to the meeting she coordinated the placement of the last of the campaign signs.

YPN Municipal By-Election 2011: All Candidates Forum

Darcy appeared with the five other candidates this afternoon in a debate organized by the Young Professionals of Nanaimo. There was a lot of talk about business development. Darcy stated her position on many key issues. Her closing statement was the only one made by a candidate that talked about people. It brought a round of much deserved applause. If you can't watch the entire debate, please watch the closing remarks, Darcy nailed it. When a candidate speaks with compassion and conviction such as Darcy did, it becomes clearer on who should represent Nanaimo on City Council.

Election Day is March 26, 2011.

All candidates were put on the spot with the question what would your theme song be. For the record, Darcy led off with the DUCK SONG

Darcy Walks the Line at VIU

Darcy stands alongside Iris Taylor, the rep for the Canadian Labour Congress who was there to support the VIU Faculty Association who went on strike at 08:00 this morning. Darcy walked the line for a couple of hours in the rain to show her support. She will be back on the line periodically but hopes for a positive resolution to be found quickly. Darcy has received the endorsement of the Nanaimo, Duncan and District Labour Council.

A Beautiful Saturday in Nanaimo

Darcy and family spent a hectic Saturday. Skating lessons at Frank Crane arena. A tour of the home show where she stopped to say hi to Aubrey from K & S Railings and then off to the Picnic in the Park Snowboard Challenge, a strategy session with her campaign manager and then off to scout sign locations. "As a community we need to ensure that these types of things are available to people of all income levels."

My vision of Nanaimo includes balance. Placing a stronger, balanced focus on Nanaimo's Economic Development as well as reviewing projects to increase our density in the downtown core while ensuring Neighbourhood Plans and the Official Community Plan are being respected. I would like to see more balance in affordable housing to ensure families in our community can live a life outside of poverty and fear. I call upon people of all generations to get out and vote in this byelection.
